What’s It Really Like Behind The Scenes At The Jerry Springer Show?

The Call That Started It All

Here I am at the gym buried under a squat bar mid-set, sweat pouring. I’m completely in the zone. Yet, my phone won’t quit. “Ring. Ring. Ring.” Relentless. Like it personally has a grudge against leg day.

The phone’s won’t stop ringing and I decide I had better pick it up, “Hello? PartyDancersUSA, how can I help you?” I wheezed, slightly more out of breath than I wanted to admit.

“IT’S THE JERRY SPRINGER SHOW!” Destiny is on the other end of the phone. She announces this at a volume that probably rattled windows in the entire gym. “AND THEY WANT ME THERE SUNDAY THROUGH TUESDAY!”

Ok, hang on let me set these weights down. This one deserved my full attention.

Assessing The Situation Like A Professional

“Okay Dez, first things first, what exactly will you be doing there?” I asked, choosing my words carefully. “You’re not going to be dodging flying chairs and angry ex-girlfriends across the stage, right? When they sayfeature dancer”, what does that actually mean on the Springer Show?”

Because let’s be honest, on the Jerry Springer Show, the phrase “feature dancer” can mean a lot of things. Not all of them real glamorous.

She filled me in and explained what the show producer had relayed to her. After that, I shifted into full manager mode. We had to talk.

“Look, as your manager, I don’t see this as a bad career move at all. It actually is great exposure. But we need your role clearly defined, no nonsense, no becoming a prop for audience chaos. You go in professional, you do your bit, you represent yourself and PartyDancersUSA the right way. Got it?”

She got it.

Day 1: New York, Connecticut And A Very Quiet Motel

Destiny Does Jerry 2

Destiny’s adventure began with a flight to New York. Afterward, she enjoyed a personal limo ride to the Jerry Springer’s studio in Stamford, Connecticut.

The limo driver had a fetish for feet. Yes, he asked to see her feet. Destiny avoided the demand by offering up her platform dance shoes for him to ogle instead.

Upon arrival she was warmly greeted, met her producers “Allisa and Ashley” and got the rundown on her performance. So far, pretty much all showbiz folks.

Then she called me from her accommodations and things got a little interesting. She noticed she was the only cast member in that particular hotel. Hum. And across the street was the city police station.

“Sonny… I’m the only person staying in this motel from the show.”

The Springer Show had set her up in a beautiful suite, all to herself. No cast. No crew. It was just Destiny and a nice room. The quiet was eerie. You wondered if you were in a horror movie or a luxury spa retreat.

“Why am I separated from everyone else?” she asked.

“I have absolutely no idea,” I told her honestly. “But you’ve got a great room, so just go with it. Get some rest.”

Some questions are better left unanswered.

Day 2: The Green Room, The Waiting Game And Woody’s Bar & Grill

The Waiting Game

Monday, 12:30 PM. My phone rings. It’s Destiny, calling from the Green Room at Springer Studios. She’s all set, but her segment isn’t taping until 4:30. That’s four hours of sitting around, watching the organized chaos of daytime television unfold around her.

When she finally called with rehearsal updates, I heard a little tension in her voice. The backstage scene was a mixed bag. There were dancers with wildly varying skill levels. The dress rehearsal seemed designed to both separate the real performers from the rest. Its purpose was also to actually rehearse.

“Are you nervous?” I asked.

“…A little, yeah.”

“Okay, what’s the audience make-up” I asked. Destiny replied “Um, it’s almost all frat boys from the local colleges.” “Yup, definitely, all frat boys Sonny!”

“Ok, listen to me,” I said. “Just pretend you’re at Woody’s Bar & Grill on a Saturday night in February.” And the frat boys from Maine Maritime Academy are there raising hell ok?” “You understand what I’m saying right?”

There was a pause, Destiny laughed. “Yeah, Yeah, that actually helps a lot.” “Thank you Sonny.”

And just like that, the Jerry Springer Show became a regular Saturday night in Maine. Problem solved.

Rehearsal Highlights – Including One Unforgettable Prop Miscalculation

“Alright everybody, let’s go, everyone gets a turn!” the coordinator called out as the other dancers ran through their routines. Everyone got a mic except Destiny. Reason being her act was moving with all sorts of acrobatic moves, a mic wouldn’t stay her person.

Destiny nailed her performance, the coordinator even called out “Nice job hitting that ‘V,’ Destiny!”, and she pulled off a smooth champagne trick in the tub that got the room’s attention. All done in ONE TAKE flawlessly.

Dez collected her “Jerry Beads” for going topless. She also received a personally autographed Jerry Springer picture and a Jerry Springer Security T-Shirt. Best of all, in her parting gift bag, she found a pack of “Newport Menthols.” Got to love the Jerry Springer Show.

Not everyone had such a clean run. “Sassy Cassee,” the midget dancer, had appeared on the Springer Show many times before. She was supposed to pop out of a prop cake on stage. The problem was Cassee was toking on a dab pen out back. When it was time for her to push open the top of the prop, she couldn’t reach it. Yup, the cake prop was built for a normal-sized person and not one of Cassee’s stature. A definite oversight.

While taping live Destiny looked down at the prop and saw the lid opened just inches. Hearing one of the stage hands say over and over “Surprise in the cake, pop out, hello?” “Whoops.” She didn’t know what the issue was. She recalled the producer saying Cassie would pop out of the cake. She got tired of waiting and simply reached down and opened the prop. She saw Cassee just standing there, frustrated. Destiny held the prop lid open and Sassy Cassee climbed out, saving the skit.

The room went quiet for exactly one second before moving on. Welcome to the Jerry Springer Show, folks. Nobody bats an eye. IT’S LIVE TV!

Rapid Departure – Or, “The Plane, Boss, The Plane!”

The taping flew by. Almost the second it wrapped, the production team materialized in the dressing room. They seemed like they’d been waiting behind the door with a stopwatch.

“LET’S GO! MOVE IT!”

Destiny had barely finished changing when she was swept up and shuffled off to the airport. I didn’t hear from her until she was practically already boarding at 7 PM, plane home, whirlwind over.

It was, as she put it, very much an “In and Out” experience.

So… Was It Worth It?

“Did you enjoy it?” I asked when the dust settled.

“Yes,” she said. “It was a really good experience.”

She even loved the long waits. She also loved the mystery motel isolation and the chaotic final sprint to the airport. She was genuinely fascinated by getting an inside look at how the show came together behind the scenes. It was like how we put our own shows together at PartyDancersUSA, she noted. More moving parts than people realize.

The Jerry Springer Seal Of Approval

The surprising part for many is this. Jerry Springer himself is, by all accounts, a genuinely nice person. He is completely professional. Destiny met him multiple times during her appearances and had nothing but good things to say. The entire crew was kind, helpful and supportive throughout.

They gave her the freedom to wing it for her entrance. She also improvised her dance performance. This level of trust speaks volumes about the impression she made.

Destiny has actually appeared on The Jerry Springer Show multiple times, and every single visit has been a positive experience. She’s got a few entertaining stories about motel shenanigans. We’ll save those for another post. Professionally, every taping was smooth, safe and fun.

A+ to Jerry Springer and company. You run a tight ship over there. A wild ship, but a tight one.
